Although he was born in Parchim, Elmenhorst was a child from Hamburg's parents, and it was also in Hamburg where he would spend all of his later life. In 1650 he matriculated in Jena to begin his studies in Lutheran theology , which he later continued in Wittenberg and Leipzig . As a Leipzig student, he wrote his shepherd's play Rosetta in 1653 .

Throughout his life he knew how to combine his theological profession with a love of the theater, and culturally open Hamburg offered him this opportunity. In 1660 he was appointed deacon (second pastor) of the Katharinenkirche , which gave him the opportunity to test his inclination for music in his own home. His sermons , hymns and singspiele were set to music by Hamburg composers such as Georg Böhm , Johann Philipp Förtsch , Johann Wolfgang Franck , Petrus Laurentius Wockenfuß and Johann Theile .

Elmenhorst is considered to be one of the co-founders of the oldest bourgeois German opera house, the famous Hamburg Opera on Gänsemarkt , for which he wrote and translated several libretti along with other poets such as Friedrich Christian Bressand , Barthold Feind , Johann Ulrich von König and Christian Heinrich Postel (e.g. B. Polyeucte by Pierre Coerneille ). As a result of this activity he was directly involved as a theologian in the first Hamburg theater controversy, which prompted him to publish his important defensive text , Dramatologia , in 1688 .
