Johann Schlebusch

Johann Schlebusch (born October 12, 1607 in Hamburg ; † July 25, 1659 there ) was a German lawyer and mayor of Hamburg.

Life

Johann Schlebusch was the son of the wine merchant Jacob Schlebusch (1565–1624) in Hamburg. He attended the learned school of the Johanneum until 1625. His farewell speech from this school Pro iustitiae eminentia appeared in print. Schlebusch studied law at the universities of Rostock, Oxford and Orleans. At the University of Basel he received his doctorate in 1631 for a licentiate in both rights. He completed his training at the University of Strasbourg and at the Imperial Court of Justice in Speyer . When he returned to Hamburg, he was elected to the council in 1639. As councilor he represented Hamburg in diplomatic missions in Vienna to the emperor and in neighborly matters together with councilor Johann Schrötteringk and others in Glückstadt , the seat of the Danish chancellery for Holstein , and at the Gottorfer Hof in Schleswig . In 1653 he was appointed mayor in the Hamburg council and held the office until his death.

Johann Schlebusch was married to a daughter of the Hamburg canon Hermann Wetken.
