Johann Schulte (born December 14, 1621 in Hamburg ; † March 2, 1697 ibid) was a German lawyer , council secretary , council syndicate and mayor of Hamburg.

Origin and family

Schulte was a son of the senior elder in the parish Sankt Petri Albert Schulte (1576-1652) from his marriage to Gertrud von der Fechte († 1679). His sister Dorothea (1629-1674) married Andreas Ramdohr .

He married Elisabeth Reinstorp (1631–1709) on August 12, 1649 and had 13 children with her. Of his sons, Albert Schulte (1651–1702) was a lawyer, council secretary and finally protonotary in Hamburg, Johann Schulte (1662–1719) first established himself as a merchant in Lisbon , returned to Hamburg and was elected councilor in 1703 and Günther Andreas Schulte (1665–1731) settled in Livorno as a merchant and died there unmarried as the Hamburg consul .

Live and act

Schulte studied law from 1641 onwards at the universities of Rostock , Strasbourg and Basel . In Basel he completed his studies on June 12, 1647 as a licentiate in law. After traveling to Holland and France, he returned to Hamburg in 1648 and settled there as a lawyer .

From 1651 to 1652 Schulte was President of the Hamburg Lower Court . On March 16, 1658 he was elected Secretary of the Council. But only three months later he took over the business of the late Council Syndicate Joachim Petersen (1611–1658) as envoy to the English government in London . On July 20, 1668, Schulte was elected mayor as the successor to Barthold Twestreng (1612–1668). This made him the only mayor of Hamburg who had become mayor without first being a member of the council.

As mayor, Schulte took part in the Hamburg embassies to King Christian of Denmark in 1672 and 1679 to settle the disputes between Denmark and Hamburg. In 1679 the Pinneberg interim recess was closed, but the disputes were not yet resolved. In 1686, Danish troops besieged the city of Hamburg during the riots surrounding Cord Jastram and Hieronymus Snitger . The mayor Heinrich Meurer fled the city and Jastram and Snitger were executed. The dismissal of councilor Hieronymus Sillem by the Hamburg citizenship in 1696 fell during Schulte's tenure as mayor. Only with the main recession in 1712 did peace return to the city. Schulte did not live to see this anymore; he died on March 2nd, 1697 and was buried on March 9th in the main church of St. Peter. A mayor's penny was minted on his death .
