Peter Lütkens (* July 2, 1636 in Hamburg ; † August 28, 1717 there ) was a Hamburg lawyer , diplomat , councilor and mayor .

Origin and family

Lütkens was a son of the mayor of the same name Peter Lütkens from his first marriage to Cäcilie von Spreckelsen († 1651), daughter of the senior citizen and councilor Peter von Spreckelsen († 1630).

His sister Anna Maria Lütkens († 1712) was married to the councilor Vincent Rumpff (1637–1682).

Lütkens married in 1662 Sophia Dorothea Langermann († 1664), daughter of Gerhard Langermann (1603-1646) and sister of his stepmother Anna Elisabeth Langermann, the second wife of his father Peter Lütkens the elder. His wife Sophia Dorothea died two years after the wedding without leaving any children, but Lütkens did not enter into a second marriage.

Live and act

After finishing school, Lütkens studied at the University of Leipzig and the University of Heidelberg . In Heidelberg in 1659 he defended his dissertation with Heinrich David Chuno (1604–1665) and completed his studies as a licentiate in law. After his studies he traveled to France, Germany and Italy and returned to Hamburg in 1662.

On August 16, 1678, he was elected councilor for Heinrich Meurer , who was elected mayor in Hamburg . As such, Lütkens was sent to Celle with councilor Caspar Westermann (1622–1688) in the same year , where he negotiated with Duke Georg Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg about the billeting of the Braunschweig-Lüneburg troops in the Vierlanden . On June 3, 1679, he traveled with the council syndicate Wolder Schele (1649–1700) to visit King Louis XIV in Paris . On July 20, 1680, Lütkens traveled again as envoy to Celle. In May 1681 he was sent to the royal court of King Christian V of Denmark in Copenhagen with envoys from the Hanseatic cities of Bremen and Lübeck . Originally, Denmark was supposed to protect Hamburg from the threats of the Brunswick-Lüneburg troops, instead Denmark attacked Hamburg in August 1686. This attack could be repulsed on August 26, 1686 with the help of the Braunschweig-Lüneburg troops. On October 20, 1687, Lütkens traveled to Celle again to finally settle the dispute with Duke Georg Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Lüneburg.

On November 3, 1687, he was elected mayor for the late Diedrich Moller . After the death of Joachim Lemmermann (1622–1704), Lütkens also became the oldest mayor. After Lütkens was mayor for almost 30 years and the oldest mayor for 13 years, he died at the age of 81 on August 28, 1717 and was buried on September 6, 1717. A mayor's penny was minted on his death .
