Calçoene , officially Município de Calçoene , is a small town with a large municipality in the Brazilian state of Amapá in the Região Norte . It is around 374 km from the capital Macapá . The population was estimated to be 11,117 as of July 1, 2019. The inhabitants who live in the approximately 14,231 km² area are called Calçoenenser (Portuguese calçoenenses ). The population density in 2010 was 0.7 people per km².

geography

The landscape and biome are predominantly shaped by the Amazon rainforest , in the west also by Cerrado . The place is on the Rio Calçoene , which flows into the South Atlantic . In addition to river traffic, Calçoene is accessible via the AP-156 national road.

In comparison, the total area of the municipality is almost the size of Schleswig-Holstein. The municipality is divided into three districts: Calçoene (seat), Cunani and Lourenço .

The climate is tropical according to the Köppen and Geiger Am / Af climate classification . The average temperature is 26.4 ° C. There is a lot of precipitation and few dry spells.

history

The area, formerly known as Cunha do Norte , was under the municipality of Amapá until 1956 and became a legally independent municipality on December 22, 1956.

In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Oiapoque and the Região geográfica intermediária Oiapoque-Porto Grande .

City administration

Executive: In the 2016 supplementary local elections for Amapá, Jones Fábio Nunes Cavalcante became city prefect (mayor) for the 2017-2020 term of office for the Partido Popular Socialista (PPS). The legislature rests with a city council (Câmara Municipal) made up of nine elected city councilors (vereadores).

Calçoene is considered structurally weak and in 2016 received federal grants of 10,510,655 reals (around 2.489 million euros) and government grants of 1,983,042 reals (around 469,529 euros).

Standard of living

The human development index for cities, abbreviated HDI (Portuguese: IDH-M ), was at the very low value of 0.342 in 1991, at the low value of 0.488 in 2000, and at the mean value of 0.643 in 2010.
