Cutias , officially Município de Cutias , also Cutias do Araguary or Cutias do Araguari , is a small town with a large municipality in the Brazilian state of Amapá in the Região Norte . It is around 106 km from the capital Macapá . The population was estimated on July 1, 2018 at 5864 inhabitants. The inhabitants who live in the approximately 2179 km² area are called Cutienser (Portuguese cutienses ). The population density in 2010 was 2.2 people per km².

Geography and origin of name

The municipality is named after the local name Cutia for the huntable and edible agoutis ( Dasyprocta ), a species of rodent that occurs frequently there .

The landscape and biome are predominantly shaped by the Amazon rainforest . The climate is tropical according to the Köppen and Geiger Am climate classification . The average temperature is 26.9 ° C. There is a lot of precipitation and few dry spells.

The place is on the Rio Araguari , which flows into the South Atlantic . In addition to river traffic, Cutias is accessible via the AP-070 state road, which ends in Cutias.

history

The area was under the municipality of Macapá until 1992 and became a legally independent municipality on May 1, 1992.

In 2017, the Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística changed the assignment to geostatistical regions and assigned the municipality to the Região geográfica imediata Oiapoque and the Região geográfica intermediária Oiapoque-Porto Grande .

City administration

Executive: In the local elections in 2016, Raimundo Barbosa Amanajás Filho became city prefect (mayor) for the term from 2017 to 2020, who ran for the Partido Republicano da Ordem Social (PROS). The legislature rests with a city council (Câmara Municipal) made up of nine elected city councilors (vereadores). The municipality forms a single district.
