The eunuchs sit howling in the harem

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The eunuchs sit howling in the harem, and the refrain of a German post-war Foxtrot hit begins, the surtitle of which is Scandal in the Harem . In the sheet music editions and on the record labels he is referred to as "Comedy Fox". The music was composed by Gerhard Winkler , the text was written by Ralph Maria Siegel . It was published in 1947 by the Kasparek music publisher in Munich.

background

The composer Winkler, mainly known for his Italian hits, embarks on a cheerful excursion into oriental regions for two stanzas , which with harem , harem women, eunuchs and a cruel ("behead and curse") sultan still show all occidental pictorial clichés , that have been associated with this part of the world since orientalism :

Refrain:

The eunuchs sit howling in the harem.
The sultan's favorite wife has fled.
He will behead and curse them all:
the favorite woman is expecting a son!
The Sultan is not petty, but
it is embarrassing:
he was away for a whole year!
The eunuchs sit howling in the harem,
because one of them is totally derailed on duty.

Performers

In January 1948 Walter Dobschinski recorded the title for Amiga with the dance band of the Berliner Rundfunk . With an ensemble, Peter Igelhoff recorded the title in a swinging version at Tempo . Perhaps the best-known recording of it was made by the Comedien Quartet in July 1948 with Polydor . For the crystal -Nachfolgemarke Imperial sang Erwin Hartung the song to accompany the dance orchestra by Hans-Werner Kleve. Again for Amiga , the Corni Trio, accompanied by the Bruno Klennert Quartet , recorded the title on their “Sonderklasse” label in October 1948 ; later the group was known in the West as the " Cornel Trio ".

Musically

The founder of the music group "Friedel Hensch und die Cyprys", Werner Cyprys , recorded the song again under the pseudonym Jack Terry in 1961 with Polydor (label number 24 644).

The opera parodist and Diseuse Annette Postel sang the song in 2010 in her program Heut 'nacht ist mir so o-la-la with chansons and hits from the 1930s and 1940s, accompanied by the Schwanen Salon Orchestra.

The actor and musician Ulrich Tukur “smiled and looked towards the Orient” when he performed the hit on New Year's Eve 2013/14 in Wuppertal; also rose retro bands like the "Ballaststofforchester Salzburg" under its conductor Egon Achatz, with Serenade "The 3 Tenors", gladly funny comedy Fox on, still has an opportunity to show talent for comedy.

Literary

The song line is also quoted several times in the more recent narrative literature, e.g. E.g. in Gustav Adolf Himmel's first novel Überfahrt from 1962, then in 1982 in Will Berthold's novel Geld wie Heu , in Matthias Zschokke's novel Lieber Niels , published by Wallstein Verlag in 2012, in 2014 in Stefanie Zweig's autobiographical novel Irgendwo in Deutschland und in Else Scherhag's memories from my childhood , published in 2014 under the title Helle und Dunkel Tage , in 2015 by Hans Müller-Jüngst in his novel Paulo Becomes a Student Councilor and also in 2015 in Meg Cabot's fifth Heather Wells crime thriller Is there a life after the cake? , which Claudia Geng translated.

The song is also mentioned in the socially critical play The Spring Festival by the multiple award-winning writer Gerlind Reinshagen .

A radio play thriller, episode 18 of its series about the master detective Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Augustus van Dusen , author Michael Koser gave the title The eunuchs sit howling in the harem .
