Professor van Dusen (actually Professor Dr. Dr. Dr. Augustus van Dusen , also The Thinking Machine ) is the main character and thus namesake of a 77-part radio play series, which was first produced and broadcast by RIAS from 1978 to 1999 and later by Deutschlandradio . The series is based on the short stories by the writer Jacques Futrelle (there: Professor Augustus S. F. X. van Dusen ). The radio plays have been published in a digitally remastered version by Highscore Music since 2010 .
New episodes have been produced since 2015, until 2019 with the participation of the original author Michael Koser , although he had previously excluded new episodes several times.
There are also comic adaptations of some radio plays.

characters
Prof. van Dusen
The figure of Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Augustus van Dusen (at Futrelle: Augustus SFX Van Dusen), called The Thinking Machine , born on March 2, 1846, was invented around 1900 by the American writer Jacques Futrelle . Van Dusen embodies the epitome of the modern scientist at the beginning of the 20th century, who has a passion for solving tricky criminal cases. In Germany, the figure was best known for the radio plays by Michael Koser in the Berlin RIAS (from 1994: Deutschlandradio Berlin ). Only a small part of these cases build on the stories of Futrelle; the remaining cases are from Michael Koser's own pen. The main role was spoken by Friedrich W. Bauschulte (1923-2003) in all 79 radio play episodes (77 episodes, two of which were two-part) .
Hutchinson Hatch
Hutchinson Jefferson Hatch Jr. was created by Jacques Futrelle. He is a detective assistant, companion, chronicler and friend of Professor van Dusen. He supports the great amateur criminologist in numerous criminal cases. Initially introduced by Futrelle only as a secondary character, the meaning of the character for Michael Koser, who edited some of the original stories for the radio and also created many of his own radio plays, increases significantly. Hutchinson Hatch takes on the role of narrator and questioner. Klaus Herm (1925–2014) was the speaker in all radio play episodes.
Guest speaker
One or more guest speakers can be heard in every radio play, including: Hubertus Bengsch , Detlef Bierstedt , Lothar Blumhagen , Horst Bollmann , Susanna Bonaséwicz , Christian Brückner , Hans-Werner Bussinger , Wolfgang Condrus , Gerd Duwner , Hermann Ebeling , Peter Fitz , Gudrun Genest , Heinz Giese , Brigitte Grothum , Till Hagen , Edith Hancke , Hans Peter Hallwachs , Monika Hansen , Beate Hasenau , Herbert Herrmann , Martin Hirthe , Klaus Jepsen , Joachim Kerzel , Reinhard Kolldehoff , Helmut Krauss , Maren Kroymann , Ulrike Krumbiegel , Tilly Lauenstein , Helga Lehner , Regina Lemnitz , Arnold Marquis , Max Volkert Martens , Peter Matić , Otto Mellies , Klaus Miedel , Edgar Ott , Katja Riemann , Christian Rode , Liane Rudolph , Otto Sander , Peter Schiff , Gunter Schoß , Hans Teuscher , Jürgen Thormann , Eric Vaessen , Herbert Weißbach , Harry Wüstenhagen and many others.

history
The best overview of the radio play series Professor van Dusen is probably given by the introductory words by director Rainer Clute to the radio feature Der Fall van Dusen ( Deutschlandradio 1999):
"Since the start of the cheerful historical crime series in 1978, Michael Kosers Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. August van Dusen, brilliant scientist and passionate amateur criminologist, with his loyal assistant, companion and chronicler Hutchinson Hatch, has taken care of the solution of unsolvable cases around the world and has kept a steadily growing audience in suspense year after year. "
“Saturday, June 24, 1978: the first radio play production day of the first Van Dusen crime novel! A day on which the whole energy of those involved was concentrated, because there was a lot to be regulated before production could begin. The prelude to the planned series was rather slow. Michael Koser, author of this series of radio plays, was not very well received by RIAS Berlin's radio drama dramaturgy. The then head of the entertainment program, Hans Rosenthal , reacted much more positively, and his series-proven editorial team was happy to take on this new project. The only thing missing was a suitable and interested director. Michael Koser approached me and quickly convinced me of his idea. We both knew each other as a writer / director team à la Holmes / Watson, Miss Marple / Mr. Stringer or something similar. Now it was time to find the protagonists for the main roles (Professor van Dusen and Hutchinson Hatch). After some deliberation, the choice fell on Friedrich W. Bauschulte, then a member of the ensemble of the Schiller Theater, which has long since closed, and also "the voice" of some prominent actors in the dubbing work. He became Prof. Dr. Dr. Dr. Augustus van Dusen, called The Thinking Machine ; Klaus Herm, first working for the Schiller Theater, then as a freelance actor, became Hutchinson Hatch, the mad reporter for the Daily New Yorker , van Duzen's constant companion and assistant as well as a meticulous chronicler of the adventures of his famous professor. "
“After a relatively short period of time, our production team grew together into a very well-coordinated ensemble, which from the start included a permanent technical team that has changed little over the years. Shortly after the start of the series, Sylvia Rauer joined us, first as an assistant director and now as an indispensable co-director. Some of the radio plays that were produced in the very early days under great time stress and in an improvisational mood are still my favorite crime novels today, for example Whiskey in the Clouds or Red Blood and White Cheese . This audio piece was also the beginning of an increasingly important part of music. The crime thriller set in the Swiss Alps was enriched exclusively with madrigal music, a very unusual choice for the time, as the average crime thriller music tended to use the crime scene genre. Van Dusen Music has now found its own fan community, which represents its interests hand in hand with the Van Dusen Fan Club that has existed in Berlin for years. Again and again I was asked to give the sources of the soundtrack music for die-hard fans or to compile soundtracks. Unfortunately: There are no soundtracks from Van Dusen crime novels. The sources, on the other hand, are accessible to everyone: it is what we generally call “classical music”. So we don't use specially composed music, but it's always, mostly elaborately, edited. And it belongs to the text that inspired it. Without the text, it will probably lose a lot of its impact. "
Since October 2010, the digitally remastered episodes on CD and for download are in order of production released (see table above), first by Folgenreich , one for Universal Music Group belonging radio play label. The distribution rights had previously been acquired by the Highscore Music label. After the appearance of the first eight episodes, both labels announced in January 2013 that all further episodes would appear directly in the distribution of Highscore Music without any consequences. At the end of each episode, a comment by author Michael Koser and director Rainer Clute is added, in which background information and anecdotes on the respective production are reported.
controversy
In 1980 the RIAS refused to broadcast the 17th case in the series ( Two corpses on the Orient Express ) because the plot was too macabre. Author Michael Koser:
“My then editor at RIAS, who was very much in favor of the professor and me (...), for reasons of taste and aesthetics, did not want to accept that the victim was not only murdered but also eaten. She went to her boss, who also had something against cannibalism in the crime drama, who went to the program director, and after much back and forth the decision was made: the manuscript would be rejected and not produced. I hurriedly devised and wrote a substitute adventure for van Dusen, 'Count Dracula's Prison'. "
The WDR then produced the radio play, albeit in a revised form, as the name Professor van Dusen could not be used for licensing reasons. The episode turned into a Sherlock Holmes parody with the title The Horrific Adventure on the Orient Express , the protagonists were renamed Shylock Homes (the van Dusen role, this time voiced by Klaus Herm ) and Dr. Watts ( Michael Thomas ). A commercial release followed in 1994.

In March 2015 Allscore and Highscore Music announced the production of new Professor van Dusen episodes. The numbering started again from the beginning, the consequences also differ in design from the previous re-releases. In addition to other main speakers, the production team is also different from that of the radio plays, only author Michael Koser was involved again. However, Koser is no longer the sole author of the new cases. In the past he had repeatedly emphasized that the series ended with the end of the radio plays. The first episode appeared in April 2015. In October 2019, Koser announced that he would no longer participate in the further development of the series for reasons of time.

Sherlock Holmes & Co
In the radio play series "Sherlock Holmes & Co", which has been produced since 2010 and is a homage to Sherlock Holmes , Professor van Dusen and Hutchinson Hatch play in some episodes instead of Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson with. Here too, Hutchinson Hatch acts as the narrator. Martin Keßler as Professor SFX van Dusen and Norbert Langer as Hutchinson Hatch were selected for the speakers . The radio plays are published by Romantruhe / Rough Trade Distribution . The Van Dusen cases are based on the original short stories by Jacques Futrelle and are more closely based on the original. Author Markus Winter said in an interview:
“Back then, in the fairway of the Holmeswelle, Futrelle wrote very beautiful, classic detective stories with the thinking machine. Koser mainly wrote his own stories. And its further development of the van Dusen has very, very little to do with the original. "

The very last Van Dusen case: Hutchinson Hatch and the Voice from Beyond
Hutchinson Hatch and the Voice from Beyond is a prose story by Michael Koser from the beginning of May 1916 from the year 2009. He also describes it as the very last Van Dusen case :
“For me the story is the worthy end to the long, successful series around Professor van Dusen. I hope I don't disappoint the fans too much if I categorically state here: There will be no further Van Dusen cases. The chronicle is closed - I'm done with the professor. "
