Laundry owner Stefanie Ritter met the pilot Kai Mertens at work when he wanted to bring his uniform to the dry cleaner. The two meet and eventually develop a relationship with each other. The pilot takes Stefanie's birthday as an opportunity to give them both a plane ticket to Mexico. Stefanie is beside herself with joy, only she wonders what will become of her five-year-old son Timmi during this time. But her friend Andrea Heine immediately agreed to take Timmi into her home. The next day they are already on the plane heading for Mexico. They arrived after an eleven hour flight and were spending a romantic day on the terrace of their villa over the gulf. The next day Stefanie reaches into the void with her arm in bed, Kai has disappeared without a trace. The police suspect her of being involved in his disappearance and eventually accuse her of murder. Nobody believes in her innocence and the rough manners in prison take Stefanie pretty psychologically.
When her lawyer Paul Linke is put to her side, he gives her little hope. Ultimately, it is the laundry owner's fighting spirit that prompts him to replace Stefanie in order to get her out of the predicament.

The critics of the television magazine TV Spielfilm rated In the Sea of Lies with the thumbs down and drew the overall conclusion: "Family snotters, disguised as tortilla thrillers".
