action

Trojan comes out of prison and wants his former accomplice Richard Bauer, whom he did not betray, to have his share in the coup they made back then. Richard Bauer feeds him off with a ridiculous 10,000 euros and also sends him two killers on his neck. Since Trojan needs money, he visits the planner to find out if the planner has a job for him. The planner suggests a robbery on a jeweler, but when Trojan meets the two accomplices (an alcoholic and a heroin addict) designated for the coup, he drops out of the business. He found out about the possibility of robbing a money transport from the lawyer Dora Hillmann. Martin Krüger, a casual acquaintance of hers, works for the company and can give her important information. Trojan visits his old buddy Nico and persuades him to take part in this robbery.

Meanwhile, the police officer René Meyer, who also works in the drug trade, has learned from one of his salespeople that Trojan is back in business. By monitoring Trojan and Dora Hillmann, he gets on the trail of the coup. After the successful attack, he takes the share from Martin Krüger and kills him. When he breaks into Dora Hillmann's apartment to get the money from her, too, he is shot by Trojan.

Dora Hillmann and Trojan split up. He throws René Meyer's body into a river and hides in his forest hut. Meanwhile, the two killers Richard Bauer sent out torture and kill Trojan's buddy Nico. The next morning they sneak to the forest hut. Trojan notices them and can kill them. After removing the bodies, he returns to his hut and discovers the police there. He must flee without his prey. He steals a car at a gas station and drives into the night.

backgrounds

Although Im Schatten is always compared to the films of Jean-Pierre Melville, Thomas Arslan also sees his film in the tradition of Don Siegel and his The Great Coup ( Charly Varrick ).

Originally, Thomas Arslan planned to put the corrupt police officer at the center of his film, but then decided in favor of the criminal. In contrast to the films by Jean-Pierre Melville, he is much more concerned with the everyday life of the characters than with their mythical exaggeration.

Thomas Arslan about Mišel Matičević , the performer of the Trojan: “He is incredibly precise in his movements and gestures. And he has the corresponding physicality. There was also little discussion about the inside of the character. Of course we talked about all sorts of things in advance, but the shooting was really just about finding physical solutions for a scene. "

Reviews

“Thomas Arslan shot an atmospheric 'film noir' in modern Berlin: 'In the shadow'. The film works on all levels, as a thriller, as an art film and as a city portrait. And that's a lot. "

- Frankfurter Rundschau

"It's amazing that a crime thriller, in which so little happens at first glance, can be so thrilling."

- Hamburger Abendblatt

“Why is Im Schatten so exciting despite its sobriety? Because Thomas Arslan brings the genre of the gangster film back to itself. Because it shows that the mechanics of the genre that he has carefully uncovered are sufficient to create that enigmatic mixture of gloom, forlornness and futility that defines film noir. "
