Before the area was settled by whites, the Skykomish lived in the region between Sultan and Index . They spoke Lushootseed , a language of the Coast Salish; fishing in the Skykomish River was a significant part of their economic life.

Logging contributed significantly to the economic boom of smaller settlements in the eastern part of the area in the second half of the 19th century, which in 1861 became Snohomish County. A gold discovery in the nearby Monte Cristo in 1889 drove more explorers and settlers to the area. The city is named after the nearby Mount Index .

Index was officially recognized as a local authority on October 11, 1907 .

The Sunset Falls of the Skykomish River, a nearby almost 100 meter long granite channel with a 30 meter difference in altitude, is about 1.6 km from the city on the South Fork Skykomish River .
