The Infantería de Marina is a part of the Spanish Navy that specializes in amphibious missions. It is considered to be the oldest marine infantry in the world.

history

The Infantería de Marina is the oldest existing marine infantry in the world. It was founded on February 27, 1537 by King Charles I of Spain (better known as Emperor Charles V ) and called the Compañías Viejas del Mar de Nápoles . At first, however, they were only given to the galleys in the Mediterranean as units for close-range combat. It was Philip II who introduced the concept of using them as landing forces as well.

The Infantería de Marina consists mainly of two units - the Tercio de Armada and the Fuerza de Protección:

Tercio de Armada

Structure of the Marine Brigade

The Tercio de Armada (TEAR), stationed in San Fernando, refers to the amphibious forces of the Spanish marine infantry (Infantería de Marina). The Tercio de Armada is in turn formed by the Brigada of the Infantería de Marina (BRIMAR) and the Unidad de Base (UB).

    • Grupo de Armas Especiales - Engineer Battalion (GRAE)
  • Unidad de Base - base command

Fuerza de Protección

The Fuerza de Protección (FUPRO) is entrusted with the guarding and protection of marine facilities and personnel. The FUPRO consist of:

  • Tercio del Sur , also in San Fernando
  • Tercio del Norte , Ferrol
  • Tercio de Levante , Sierra del Pelayo
  • Unidad de Seguridad del Mando Naval de Canarias (USCAN)
  • Agrupación de Infantería de Marina de Madrid (AGRUMAD)
