Ingo Steinwart , b. Bartels (born September 19, 1970 in Bremen ) is a German mathematician and university professor. He is an expert in the fields of support vector machines , applied stochastics and entropy numbers .

Life

Steinwart grew up in Bremen, passed his Abitur in 1990 at the grammar school on Hamburger Straße and completed the following civil service in the special educational dormitory "Haus Hardenberg". He then enrolled at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in 1991 and began studying mathematics and computer science . He completed this in March 1997 with the thesis on weighted standard inequalities for operators between spaces Bochner-integrable functions as a qualified mathematician. From April of the same year, his achievements earned him a scholarship in the graduate college "Analytical and stochastic structures and systems" at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena . With a dissertation on Entropy of C (K) - valued operators and some applications it was in February 2000, summa cum laude for Dr. rer. nat. PhD .

Scientific career

Between March 2000 and March 2003 Steinwart worked as a research assistant at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena. He participated in various publications as well as in the project entropy numbers, s-numbers and eigenvalues of operators and their applications and was also a member of Bernd Carl's research project entropy methods for operators to estimate the generalization ability of support vector machines and related kernel-based algorithms , which is sponsored by the German Research community received. His work in Jena was interrupted by two stays at other universities. In September and October 2001 he traveled as a visiting researcher to the Research School of Information Sciences and Engineering (RSISE) at the Australian National University in Canberra and from March to August 2002 he was a guest researcher in Bernhard Gramsch's research group at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz .

In March 2003 Steinwart accepted a position as a research associate in the Computer, Computational & Statistical Sciences Division (CCS-3) of the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the United States . He was employed there until April 2010, since July 2008 as Scientist Level 4. In January 2010, he also received a temporary teaching position until June 2011 at the Jack Baskin School of Engineering of the Department of Computer Science at the University of California, Santa Cruz . Ingo Steinwart has held the chair for stochastics ( W3 professorship ) at the University of Stuttgart since April 2010 - located at the Institute for Stochastics and Applications in the Department of Mathematics.
