Ingvar is a male Scandinavian given name .

Origin and meaning

The two-part name Ingvar has its roots in the Nordic region. The first component is derived from the old Icelandic god name Yngvi . The second part is probably about old Norse mr "Heer, Heeresführer , Krieger" (< ancient Germanic * harjaz , cf. Heer ). Ingvar therefore means "general, warrior Yngvis".

In early Norse history there were several people named Ingvar (actually Yngvarr or Ingvarr) or Ivar. The old Russian name Igor is probably also derived from the Nordic name (see Igor of Kiev ).

distribution

Ingvar is mainly found in Iceland , Sweden and Denmark .
