The International Delphic Council (The International Delphic Council or IDC for short ) is the highest authority for all questions relating to the Delphic Games of the Modern Age and Delphic Youth Games. The main goal of the worldwide non-profit organization is the reintroduction of the ancient Pythian Games of Delphi based on the model of the modern Olympic Games and the introduction of Delphic Youth Games.

Historical reference

The history of the Pythian Games can be traced back to 582 BC. When the execution of the games was transferred to the Amphictyony in Delphi . This council of the twelve Greek tribes was a loose association of surrounding cities on a religious-cultural basis. Pythian games were held at the foot of Mount Parnassus in Delphi in honor of Apollo . In 394 AD Theodosius I , Emperor of Rome and Byzantium, banned the Pythian and Olympic Games as pagan events.

In the first half of the 20th century, a single country -  Greece  - tried to revive the Pythian Games of Delphi, thanks to the initiative of the Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos . The Delphic Festival took place for the first time in 1927, but in 1930 this initiative had to be abandoned for economic reasons.

Establishment of the international organization

The first steps were taken in 1980 by the “Musica Magna” working group, which was renamed the International Society “Musica Magna International” (MMI) in Munich in 1983 . The UNESCO General Director Federico Mayor Zaragoza supported the unique project.

The revival of the Delphic Movement, comparable to the modern Olympic Games , was prepared by the MMI. With the establishment of the International Delphic Council (IDC), the dream of MMI President Christian Kirsch (Germany) became a reality.

The Delphic Games of the Modern Era offer the dialogue of cultures a worldwide stage for competition, lectures, presentations and the exchange of ideas in order to promote future-oriented developments in the arts, the preservation of cultural heritage and understanding among peoples.

100 years after the revival of the ancient Olympic Games, d. H. In 1994, representatives from Argentina , China , Germany , Ecuador , France , Greece , Kazakhstan , Libya , Liechtenstein , Lithuania , Mexico , Nigeria , Austria , the Philippines , Poland , Russia , Switzerland , Slovakia , the United States of America and Cyprus met - at the invitation of Christian Kirsch in Berlin's Schönhausen Palace to the founding congress of the International Delphic Council (IDC).

The symbolism of the movement is reminiscent of the Olympic symbolism. The flag with the Delphic rings, which are connected in a circle like a flower, was designed by Christian Kirsch and symbolizes the bond between the six Delphic art categories.

The board of directors of the IDC was determined at the founding congress. The founding members elected the initiator and founder Johann Christian B. Kirsch as Secretary General of the IDC. Ebun A. Oyagbola from Nigeria (President of the African MMI Department) was elected first President of the IDC, and Professor Izaly Zemtzovsky from Saint Petersburg (now residing in the USA) was elected Vice-President.

The private sector is an important source of funding for the organization. It cannot be said that major sponsors immediately expressed their willingness to support this new initiative. The host countries of the Delphic Games need not only private sponsors but also organizational and financial support from the state and, if possible, from international organizations. The first official participants in the International Delphic Movement were the founding members of the IDC. The IDC website contains excerpts from the greetings of prominent personalities and institutions. The number of participating countries rose to 38 by 2003.

Following the example of the old amphictyony , the IDC board received the same name since 2001. The board of directors is elected for two years by the general assembly of the IDC. On the IX. During the session of the IDC in Jeju / Korea, the current board (amphictyony) was elected and the acceptance of three association languages was determined: English (official language), German and Greek. International Delphic Ambassadors include world-famous people such as: Nelson Mandela (South Africa), Lothar de Maizière (Germany).

National Delphic Organizations

The co-organizers of the Delphic Games (for adults and youth) are two organizations - the International Delphic Council and the national Delphic Organizations, which can have different names (council, committee, association, union etc.). You will receive the confirmation of admission from the IDC after the official registration in your own country. The most important prerequisites for a successful cooperation are stated in the statutes (IDC and national organizations).

After the IDC was founded in 1994, countries such as Belarus , Germany , Georgia , Greece , China , Japan , Nigeria , the Philippines , Russia and the USA were particularly active in setting up the National Delphic Organizations . The first regional youth games took place in Georgia, Albania and Russia.

The National Delphic Organizations create their own logo, which partly contains the symbolism of the IDC. The respective games have their own logos, which correspond to the implementation regulations of the IDC.

The decision on the respective venue for the Delphic Games is made by the IDC board in an extraordinary meeting.

The Delphic Games are organized and carried out by the National Delphic Organizations together with the IDC. Yehudi Menuhin and Elena Obraszowa were among the first to congratulate .

The host country's organizing committee is also responsible for promotional activities such as the production of posters, brochures, stamps and other products related to the Delphic Games. The host country can get support from international organizations and government agencies for the event.

The National Delphic Organizations open their official websites when possible.

IDC and NDC Russia

The National Delphic Council in Russia (NDC Russia) was constituted in December 1998 at a founding conference in Kursk, at which IDC Secretary General Christian Kirsch took part. On March 19, 1999, the NDC Russia was registered with the Ministry of Justice and officially a member of the International Delphic Council that same month.

On June 26, 2000, the head of the NDC Russia V. Ponyavin turned to the Secretary General of the IDC C. Kirsch with the request that the first Delphic Games for adults be held in Moscow from December 1 to 10, 2000.

In the following years there were separation efforts, which ended in December 2004 with the withdrawal of the NDC Russia from the International Delphic Council. Russian language websites claim that the Delphic Idea was not revived until 2000 through Russian activities.

Nevertheless, Russian delegations took part in the International Delphic Games in 2007 and 2009 organized by the IDC. This is proven by the articles from the electronic magazine “Art education” and the magazine “Personality and Culture”, as well as the photos and drawings in the Delphic calendars.

Format of the modern Delphic Games

Currently the Delphic Idea is developing in the context of the new realities. The International Delphic Council has significantly updated the format of the Delphic Games.

The Pythian Games were held in honor of the god Apollo . According to the founding statutes of the IDC, the Delphic Games of the Modern Age offer the dialogue of cultures a worldwide stage for competition, lectures, presentations and the exchange of ideas with the aim of promoting future-oriented developments in the arts, the preservation of cultural heritage and understanding among peoples. Just as the Olympic idea connects people around the world through their enthusiasm for sport, according to the idea of the founding members, the Delphic Games of the Modern Age should unite people of all nations and cultures through the fascination of the arts.

The 6 Delphic Art Categories are:

  • Acoustic arts (singing, instrumental, electronic sounds ...)
  • Performing arts (dance, theater, circus ...)
  • Linguistic arts (literature, lecture, moderation ...)
  • Visual arts (painting / graphics, sculpture / installation, photography / film, architecture, design, fashion, handicrafts ...)
  • Social arts (communication, internet, media, pedagogy, didactics ...)
  • Ecological arts (landscape and town planning, preservation and care of natural, architectural and ground monuments ...)

The hosting National Delphic Council and the IDC jointly select the art disciplines that will be included in the program of competitions, presentations and exhibitions at the respective Delphic Games and Delphic Youth Games. The different cultures are offered a stage on which they can present themselves about their arts, also to learn from each other.

According to ancient tradition, the Delphic Games and the Delphic Youth Games, like the Olympic Games , take place every four years in the pre-Olympic year. In addition to games for adult participants, Delphic youth games are also played. In the run-up to the worldwide Delphic Youth Games, qualifying games (regional, national and even continental) can be held in order to put together delegations for the next International Delphic Youth Games. The Delphic Games are held every two years, alternating between the Delphic Games and the Delphic Youth Games. The participating countries send the best representatives and representatives of their national culture, determined in a selection process, who compete in competitions and illustrate the diversity of cultures in a world.

Jury, prizes and awards

Independent experts act as jurors and observers to ensure that professional assessment criteria are applied and that the prizes benefit the most talented artists - in recognition of their personal achievements as well as those of their teachers, supervisors and sponsors. Outstanding artists and young people are honored with special awards from the Delphic Games:

  • Delphic Medal (in gold, silver and bronze in comparable competition disciplines)
  • Delphic Lyra (for outstanding individual artistic achievements as part of a larger total work of art)
  • Delphic laurel branch (for unique, not comparable artistic achievements)
  • Delphic Certificate (for all active participants in the Delphic Games and Delphic Youth Games)
