Modern Delphic Games - they combine presentations, exhibitions, competitions and other activities in six different areas of art . These games have their origins in ancient Greece and refer to the tradition of the ancient Pythian games as a peacemaking competition of the arts.

The annual Delphic Festivals take place in Delphi during the summer and are primarily geared towards tourists.

As part of the famous Agone , the Pythian Games in ancient Greece claimed the cultural and spiritual leadership role for almost a thousand years and had as high a social status as the sport-oriented Olympic Games. The history of the Pythian Games in Delphi goes back 2,600 years. They took place in the year before the Olympic Games. The Panhellenic performances - mainly in the fields of theater, music and poetry - paid homage to the god Apollo , who symbolized light and beauty, music, poetry, the healing arts and the prophecy of the oracle. The Delphic Games, like the Olympic Games, were banned as pagan by Emperor Theodosius I in 394 AD .

Thanks to the initiative of Pierre de Coubertin , art competitions were also held at the Olympic Games in various countries from 1912 to 1948 . Medals were awarded for works that were thematically focused exclusively on sport .

Delphic Games of the Modern Age

On the initiative of the Greek poet Angelos Sikelianos and his American wife Eva Palmer, attempts were made in Greece in the first half of the 20th century to revive the Pythian Games of Delphi. The Delphic Festival took place for the first time in 1927, but came to an early end as early as 1930 for economic reasons.

In the second half of the 20th century the International Delphic Movement developed. In 1987 J. Christian B. Kirsch founded Musica Magna International (MMI) in Munich , a network of international cultural contacts. This initiative found the support of the Director General of UNESCO Federico Mayor Zaragoza . The association had set itself the task of reintroducing the Delphic Games.

In 1994, 100 years after the resurrection of the Olympic Games , representatives from Argentina , China , Germany , Ecuador , France , Greece , Kazakhstan , Libya , Lithuania , Mexico , Nigeria , Austria , and the Philippines met at the invitation of J. Christian B. Kirsch , Poland , Russia , Slovakia , United States and Cyprus in Berlin at Schönhausen Palace for the founding congress of the International Delphic Council . In accordance with the statutes adopted here, the Delphic Games of the Modern Age offer the dialogue of cultures a worldwide stage for competition, lectures, presentations and the exchange of ideas in order to promote future-oriented developments in the arts, the preservation of cultural heritage and understanding among peoples.

The following countries showed the greatest activity in the establishment of the national Delphic Organizations: Belarus , Germany, Georgia, Greece, Japan, China, Nigeria, the Philippines, Russia and the USA . The first regional youth delphiads took place in Georgia , Albania and Russia .

The first Delphic Youth Games took place in 1997 in Tbilisi / Georgia . The first Delphic Games for adults were held in Moscow in 2000.

Russia played an active role in the development of the International Delphic Movement from the start. In 1999 the National Delphic Council of Russia became a member of the International Delphic Council, and in December 2004 it resigned.

After 2003, many Russian websites and central mass media claim that Russia revived the Delphic Idea in 2000.

Although the National Delphic Council of Russia withdrew from the International Delphic Council, Russian delegations took part in the International Delphic Games in 2007 and 2009. This is proven by photos and drawings in the Delphic calendars as well as the articles in the electronic journal “Art education” published by the Art Education Institute of the Russian Academy of Education and an article in the journal “Personality and Culture”.

Organizations

Two organizations are currently running the Delphic Games.

The organization, International Delphic Council - «IDC Berlin», founded in 1994 , has both the international Delphic Youth Games in Tbilisi- 1997, Düsseldorf -2003, Baguio City / Philippines-2007, and the international Delphic Games for adults in Moscow-2000, Kuching / Malaysia -2005 and Jeju-si / South Korea -2009.

The new organization, International Delphic Committee - «IDC Moscow», only opened its official website on May 1, 2006, but could not provide any evidence of the establishment of this organization. In addition, the "IDC Moscow" and the National Delphic Council Russia have the same address and the same director.

Since 2005 the Delphic Youth Games have been held in Russia and in the Commonwealth of Independent States under the patronage of IDC Moscow. These Delphic Youth Games are prepared on the basis of government regulations and are usually aimed at the patriotic upbringing of young people with significant historical events. In 2008 the "IDC Moscow" held the second International Delphic Games in Saratov / Russia , the legitimacy of which has been called into question.
