International Willy Brandt Prize

The International Willy Brandt Prize is an award launched in 2011 by the SPD . The prize is intended to honor people or institutions who have worked in an exemplary manner for international understanding between peoples. The prize is endowed with 25,000 €, it is awarded annually and can also be divided.

The award is intended to commemorate the life and work of the former Federal Chancellor and SPD chairman Willy Brandt . The reason for the foundation of the award by the SPD was the 40th anniversary of the knee Falls by Willy Brandt in Warsaw . The donors of the award are the Gerhard Schröder and Doris Schröder-Köpf families as well as Gabriele and Michael Frenzel . The award will be presented at a ceremony in the Willy Brandt House in Berlin .

A jury, initially with chairman Egon Bahr , who has since passed away , suggests one or more candidates, from which the SPD party executive then determines the winner (s). Further members of the jury are Doris Schröder-Köpf, Michael Frenzel , Christine Hohmann-Dennhardt , Miriam Meckel and Eberhard Sandschneider .

Award winners

2011

The first recipient of the newly created award was the conductor Daniel Barenboim , who campaigns for international understanding in the Middle East with his “ West-Eastern Divan Orchestra ” . The Egyptian writer and playwright Laila Soliman was also awarded a special prize for special political courage. Both prizes were presented on October 25, 2011 in the Willy Brandt House in Berlin. The laudatory speech for Laila Soliman was given by Hamed Abdel-Samad .

2013

The second prize winner in 2013 was the Norwegian Prime Minister Jens Stoltenberg . The opposition politician Nikolai Statkevitch , who has been imprisoned in Belarus since 2011, received the special prize . His daughter Katja Statkevich, who lives in Ingolstadt, accepted the award for him.

2014

On April 11, 2014, the 3rd International Willy Brandt Prize was the Burmese Nobel Peace Prize winner of 1991, Aung San Suu Kyi awarded. The decades-long nonviolent commitment to peace, freedom and democracy was recognized as a “role model and great inspiration for all freedom-loving people in the world” (SPD party chairman Sigmar Gabriel ).

2015

In 2015, the Hungarian philosopher and fighter against anti-Semitism and racism Ágnes Heller was awarded the main prize, which was seen as a pointer towards the increasingly autocratic government under Viktor Orbán . The special prize was awarded employee of the NSA - whistleblower Edward Snowden , Sarah Harrison .
