Sarah Harrison (2013)

Sarah Harrison (* 1982 ) is a British journalist and WikiLeaks executive . She is considered the closest advisor to Julian Assange and accompanied Edward Snowden on his flight from Hong Kong to Moscow in the summer of 2013 . In autumn she traveled to Germany, where she lives in Berlin and works as a journalist.

Life

Childhood, adolescence, and education

Sarah Harrison grew up in a sheltered environment together with her two younger sisters in St Mary's Platt in the English county of Kent . When she was 10, she wrote and received a letter to UK Prime Minister John Major on homelessness. Her parents, the former English table tennis master and later manager Ian Harrison , and his wife Jennifer, a teacher, enabled her to attend the nearby and prestigious boarding school Sevenoaks as a day pupil . After her International Baccalaureate in 2000, Sarah Harrison spent a year as a chalet girl in the Alps and then studied English at Queen Mary University in London .

After she decided to become a journalist, she worked as an intern at the Center for Investigative Journalism in 2009 and as a research assistant at the Bureau of Investigative Journalism (BIJ) from 2010 . She graduated from City University London .

Work for WikiLeaks

During her internship at the Center for Investigative Journalism , she was responsible for the Julian Assange case before the Afghanistan war diary was published and organized files for future documentaries . Since then she has been increasingly involved in the WikiLeaks organization; their role in the organization increased in importance , especially after Daniel Domscheit-Berg left , be it in connection with the publication of the embassy dispatches or with Assange's legal battle against extradition to Sweden . Harrison is now Divisional Editor for WikiLeaks, works in the legal department headed by former Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón , and is Assange's closest advisor.

Support from Edward Snowden

Sarah Harrison in December 2013 on the 30C3 .

On June 24, 2013 WikiLeaks announced that Harrison would accompany the NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden on his flight from Hong Kong to Moscow, who wanted to apply for political asylum there . At that time she had been part of the organization for a good two years. Harrison also accompanied Snowden when he was allowed to leave Moscow 's Sheremetyevo Airport on August 1, 2013 . Guardian journalist Dominic Rushe described Harrison as an "unusual choice" because of her lack of legal qualifications, especially when compared to other WikiLeaks staff such as human rights attorney Jennifer Robinson.

Harrison entered Germany at Berlin-Tegel Airport on November 2, 2013 . In the following days she wrote an open letter to the German population. She wants to stay in Germany for the time being, as her British homeland, where almost every report falls into the “terrorism” category, is no longer safe. Encouraged by protests from the German population, she campaigns for Snowden to be granted asylum . WikiLeaks is fighting "against the secrecy of governments", the mass spying of the population and against the persecution of those "who speak this truth". WikiLeaks has won the "battle for Snowden's immediate future, but the war continues".
