action

Reporter Pierre Peders is hired to conduct an interview with actress Katya, known from television shows, which he regards as an inferior task. He is a political journalist and has reported from numerous theaters of war.

Peders meets Katya in a Manhattan restaurant . A dispute ensues: Katya accuses Pierre of not working professionally because he did not prepare for the interview. He doesn't know any of her films, and he doesn't know anything about her either. Katya leaves the restaurant. Pierre also goes and gets into a taxi. Because the taxi driver is distracted by Katya, there is a rear-end collision in which Pierre sustains a wound on his head.

Katya takes him to her nearby loft and treats the wound there. They talk, he interviews them. And a kiss ensues, which is interrupted by the ringing of Katya's phone. They drink and talk together, Pierre records their conversations. His initial disinterest in her seems to have been overcome. They keep getting closer, but are interrupted by Katya's tantrums and the ringing of her phone. In the meantime Pierre is always inclined to leave, but she stops him. When Katya leaves the living room on a phone call, Pierre sits down at her computer and begins to read. He finds her digital diary and learns that she does not love her boyfriend and feels close to death.

She comes back into the room and the verbal argument continues. Pierre confronts her with what he has read. Katya gets angry and sad, he wants to comfort her and asks her to tell what worries her. They come to an agreement: Katya tells her story if in return he also reveals a secret of himself. Both confessions are to be recorded on video. Katya then reads another section from her diary, in which she describes how she found out about her cancer. He apologizes for everything that has happened and wants to go, but she insists that he too should tell.

Pierre reports that he has recently forged sources for his newspaper articles and that his editor sent him to her because he no longer trusts Pierre. But Katya wants to know more. Pierre lets himself be persuaded and reports on his daughter's drug death, which brought him and his ex-wife back together. His ex-wife started drinking. One day she called him and asked him to come to her. But he took his time, and when he got to her later, she was dead. He blames himself for it and, in response to Katya's question, says you could say it was murder .

Katya says she is tired and now wants to go to bed. While Pierre is looking for his things, she secretly swaps the cassette in the camera. On the way out, Pierre calls his editor and reports euphorically about Katya's cancer. Shortly afterwards, Pierre is just outside, Katya calls him. She tells him about the swapped ribbons. Her confession - the diary entries - were just homework from her acting teacher for her new role in a soap opera . And she asks if she should send the tape to his editor or the police and hangs up.

The film is Buscemi's homage to the murdered Theo van Gogh. Katja Schuurman, who plays the role of Katya in the original, can be seen in a short scene as she gets out of a limousine and bumps into Pierre. Also, Steve Buscemi's brother Michael Buscemi also plays Pierre's brother. There are several allusions to Theo van Gogh in the film. That is the name of the fan who asks Katya for an autograph, Theo, and a photo of Theo van Gogh and Katja Schuurman is in Katya's apartment. In addition, the van that the taxi hits is called "Van Gogh Movers".

Reviews and awards

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film had "its moments" but that it seemed "a bit exhausted" and "unsatisfactory". The characters are a little more meek than in the original film, which should make them less obnoxious. The dialogues are "intense", but "rather superficial".

Mick LaSalle referred to the film in the San Francisco Chronicle of July 20, 2007 as a black comedy. Steve Buscemi can seem like a man better than anyone who has just washed his life down. Sienna Miller seems charming and - despite the age of 25 - like a fully grown woman.

The lexicon of international films said: “US remake of a Dutch film [...] which, despite its playful lightness, does not hide the fact that it is about a struggle for power relations, in the course of which the mechanisms of the media society come to light. A show down carried out by convincing actors, the development of which works like an experimental arrangement. "

Sienna Miller was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award 2008 for best actress.
