Ioannis Masmanidis (born March 9, 1983 in Leverkusen ) is a German football player of Greek descent.

Career

The son of Greek parents has played for Bayer 04 Leverkusen since he was six and went through the youth teams up to the second team, where he played for the first time in 2002. In the same year he was included in the professional squad of Leverkusen, but only came to a single first division appearance in two years.

He then moved to Karlsruher SC in the second division in 2004 for a transfer fee of € 10,000 . The left offensive midfielder got hold of a regular place in Baden and was considered a great talent.

After he made his debut in the German U-21 national team in October 2005 and scored a goal in the first game there, he switched to Bundesliga club Arminia Bielefeld during the winter break in early 2006 for € 500,000 from his current contract . In the second half of the season he was used in almost every Arminen game and the following year Masmanidis claimed a regular place in the team and scored his first Bundesliga goal on September 30, 2006. In the 2007/08 season , however, he only made eight League appearances, whereupon he decided to leave the club in the summer.

Free of charge, he moved to the first division relegated 1. FC Nuremberg in the second division. He came at the request of his former trainer Thomas von Heesen , who had already brought him to Bielefeld. In Franconia, however, Masmanidis could not prevail as a regular player. He made nine league and two cup appearances, never playing for full time. In winter 2009 he therefore signed a termination agreement and switched to the Cypriot first division club Apollon Limassol , who was trained by Thomas von Heesen, who had previously resigned from the club. In the summer of 2010 Masmanidis moved to the Greek second division team Ethnikos Piraeus . During the winter break of the 2010/11 season, he moved to the German third division club SV Wehen Wiesbaden . Where he played until the end of the season and moved to the 2011/12 season after Belgium to KAS Eupen . There he was again a regular player and was also able to convince with his goal danger. In twenty-nine games he scored fourteen goals and only just failed with KAS Eupen in relegation on promotion.

In mid-June 2012, the Belgian second division club CS Visé announced the commitment of Masmanidis for the 2012/13 season . He signed a three-year contract until the end of June 2015. In August 2014 he canceled his contract with the Belgians and moved to VfL Wolfsburg , where he was scheduled for the U23 team. For the following 2015/16 season Masmanidis moved to FC United Zurich . At the beginning of January 2016, Masmanidis returned to his hometown Leverkusen, where he briefly joined FC Leverkusen in the district league.

Masmanidis has been playing for the regional division FC Hellas Leverkusen since 2017 and is also a youth coach at Viktoria Köln .
