The Iput ( Russian Ипуть ; Belarusian Іпуць , Ipuz ) is a 437 km long left tributary of the Sosh in the east of Belarus and west of Russia .

The Iput rises near the village of Nedwed in the Klimavichy district in the east of the Belarusian Mahiljouskaja Woblasz . It flows first to the northeast and after a good 20 km it reaches the Russian Oblast Smolensk . There it soon turns south, then south-west, and largely maintains this direction on its course west of the Central Russian Plate , mainly through the Bryansk Oblast . Sectional meanders of the river strong. In the lower reaches of the Iput reaches the northern part of the Dnepr lowlands and again Belarus, whose Homelskaya Woblasz it flows through a good 40 km in a westerly direction, until it finally flows into the Sosch on the eastern edge of the city ​​of Homel .

Catchment area of ​​the Iput

The catchment area of the river covers 10,900 km². The most important tributaries are Voronitsa (length 74 km), Nadva (96 km), Voronussa (92 km) and Unetscha (105 km), all from the left. The annual mean discharge at the Nowyje Bobowitschi gauge 109 km above the mouth is 83.4 m³ / s. The Iput usually freezes over between late November and late March / early April.

The largest towns on the river besides Homel are the small towns of Surasch in Russia and Dobrusch in Belarus; other larger towns in the catchment area are Kletnja , Klinzy , Mglin , Novosybkow , Slynka and Unetscha , all in the Russian Oblast of Bryansk.
