Piroska of Hungary ( Hungarian Szent Piroska ; * 1088 ; † 13 August 1134 ) was born as the daughter of the Hungarian King Ladislaus I and his wife Adelheid of Swabia .

Life

In 1104 Piroska became the wife of the later Byzantine emperor John II Komnenos in the course of a political and dynastic compromise between Byzantium and Hungary. With her marriage she took the name Irene and the Orthodox faith. She played only a minor role in politics and, along with her eight children, devoted her life primarily to the Christian faith. She is venerated as a saint in the Orthodox Church.
