Irma Iossifowna Karakis
Irma Iossifowna Karakis ( Russian Ирма Иосифовна Каракис ; born November 4, 1930 in Kiev ) is a Soviet - Ukrainian - American architect and furniture designer .
Life
Karakis was the daughter of the architect Iossif Juljewitsch Karakis (1902–1988) and the German teacher Anna Jefimowna Karakis (1904–1993). Karakis studied at the Kiev Institute for Civil Engineering with a degree in 1954. She completed her diploma thesis with Jakow Aronowitsch Steinberg .
After graduating, Karakis worked in Kiev as an architect in the Promenergoprojekt construction project for industry and energy technology . In 1957 she moved to the Academy for Building and Architecture of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) in Kiev, where she was a research assistant and finally head of the department for interior design and interior design (until 1994). In 1962 she became a member of the Union of Architects of the USSR . In 1968, she successfully defended her candidate dissertation on new cloakroom designs in various types of school buildings.
Karakis designed dozens of thermal power stations . She created general plans for residential construction . She designed furniture sets for mass production and interior fittings for schools, hotels, apartments and restaurants. She became a member of the Ukrainian Arts and Technology Council in 1970 . Together with Walentyna Shevchenko, she restored the refectory of St. Michael's Monastery in Kiev (1973–1982).
In 2003, Karakis settled in New York City .
