Isaak Bruckner

Isaak Bruckner (born July 22, 1686 in Diegten ; † April 6, 1762 in Basel ) was a Swiss mechanic and geographer .

Life

Bruckner grew up as the son of the reformed country pastor Hans Heinrich Bruckner in Diegten. He completed an apprenticeship as a clasp and belt maker, then as a stone cutter and finally as a mechanic, after which he was accepted into the Basel guild as a housemate in 1712 . In 1722 he constructed his first globe in Basel and developed a swiveling globe by 1725. On the recommendation of Johann I Bernoulli , he came to Paris in 1725 . There he was able to present a copper globe in front of the Académie des Sciences , which was well received. He was subsequently appointed a corresponding member of the academy. In addition, Louis XV awarded him . the title of royal geographer .

In 1733, Bruckner received a call to the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg from Leonhard Euler . There he taught mechanics and manufactured mechanics, devices, tools and cards, including for Empress Anna . After leaving the Academy in 1745, he traveled through Europe via Vienna and Berlin to England and the Netherlands . In Berlin in 1749 he published a comprehensive set of maps, in the Netherlands he made a globe for the prince.

Bruckner returned to Basel in 1752. There he was appointed private lecturer for geography, mechanics and geometry at the University of Basel in 1753 on behalf of the magistrate . With his colleague Daniel Bernoulli there , he created a world map and a globe made of gilded copper in 1754 and 1755.
