Isidor Kracauer (born October 16, 1852 in Sagan , Silesia ; died April 24, 1923 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a historian and expert on Judaism in Frankfurt am Main.

Life

Isidor Kracauer studied history , German and geography at the University of Breslau , where he also received his doctorate . In 1875, Kracauer came to Frankfurt, where he worked as a history teacher at the Philanthropin in Frankfurt's Nordend until his retirement in 1919 . During this time, Kracauer began to deal intensively with the history of Frankfurt's Jews. The result of his extensive research are a number of important publications on this topic. His two-volume history of the Frankfurt Jews is now considered a standard work. From the 1880s until his death he was a board member of the Association for History and Archeology in Frankfurt am Main.

He and his wife Hedwig geb. Oppenheimer (1862–1944) headed the Julius and Amalie-Flersheim'sche Foundation from 1885 to 1917 , which was dedicated to the education and training of the sons of parents in need. Hedwig Kracauer was deported in 1942 and was a victim of the Holocaust . He was the uncle of the sociologist and writer Siegfried Kracauer , who also gave him the first spiritual suggestions in relation to his further career.

In his autobiography Ginster , Siegfried describes the scientific work method of his uncle Isidor very clearly. Isidor's brother Adolf was married to Siegfried's mother Rosette, a sister of Hedwig, who was also deported in 1942 and murdered in Treblinka.

Isidor Kracauer is buried in the old Jewish cemetery on Rat-Beil-Strasse in Frankfurt.
