Israel Kolmodin (born December 24, 1643 in Enköping , † April 19, 1709 in Visby ) was a Swedish Lutheran theologian. He is particularly known as a hymn poet .

Life

Kolmodin, son of a pastor, studied at Uppsala and Lund Universities . After his ordination in 1674, he traveled abroad for a few years. After his return he was assistant pastor at Uppsala Cathedral in 1679 and adjunct at the university in 1680, where he was promoted to associate professor in 1686 . During the Diets of 1678, 1680 and 1682 he worked as a notary for the pastorate. Together with Erik Benzelius d. Ä. and Jesper Swedberg he worked in the commission for the revision of the Swedish hymnbook , 1691–1692 also in the commission for the revision of the Bible translation. In 1692 he became superintendent in Visby and thus had episcopal powers for the Swedish island of Gotland , which had only been in Sweden since 1645 and which nominally still belonged to the Diocese of Linköping ( Visby was raised to an equal diocese in 1772 ). In this office, which he held until his death, he campaigned for the scientific and economic promotion of pastors. In addition, however, he was repeatedly involved in church policy matters in Stockholm or Uppsala. In 1693 he was promoted to Dr. theol. PhD.

Kolmodin translated hymns from German and composed his own songs, four of which were included in the hymn books of 1694 and 1695. His best-known song Den blomstertid nu kommer is still traditionally sung in Swedish schools at the beginning of the summer holidays. Kolmodin's authorship has, however, been called into question.
