inspiration

Neil Tennant's writing was inspired by his time in conservative and Catholic St Cuthbert's High School .

The chorus says: “Everything I've ever done, everything I ever do, every place I've ever been, everywhere I'm going to, it's a sin.” (“Everything I've ever done, everything, what I ever do, every place I have ever been, everywhere I go, it's a sin . ") At the end of the song the confession of guilt sounds in Latin :

"I confess to God Almighty, and to all my brothers and sisters, that I have neglected good and done bad - I have sinned in thoughts, words and works through my fault, my fault, my great fault."

controversy

At the time the single was released, DJ Jonathan King accused the Pet Shop Boys of using the melody from Cat Stevens ' song Wild World . He told The Sun newspaper . To demonstrate his opinion, he made his own cover version of Wild World . The Pet Shop Boys sued King and received extrajudicial damages that they donated to charity.
