Bilingual is the sixth studio album by the Pet Shop Boys . It was published by Parlophone on September 2, 1996 . It reached in Germany 7th place and in the United Kingdom # 4 on the charts.
Origin and reception
The pieces were mainly written by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe . The music of Se a vida é (That's the Way Life Is) was created with the participation of Nego Do Barbalho, for It Always Comes as a Surprise a sample by Stan Getz was used. The recordings took place in New York and Moscow.
In 1997 a special edition with remixes was released on a bonus CD. The remastered version released in 2001 includes the bonus CD Further Listening 1995–1997 with alternative versions and unreleased songs.
The album has influences from Latin American music . Neil Tennant described this as a reaction to the Britpop boom and as an expression of his view that the Pet Shop Boys were an international band.
Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic awarded 3 out of 5 stars for Bilingual . He described it as multifaceted, subtle and optimistic.
