Suburbia is a song by British synth-pop duo Pet Shop Boys . In a remixed version of the song, it was released as the fourth single from the album Please (1986).

The song was the duo's second top ten hit in the United Kingdom ( UK Singles Chart ), reaching number eight.

Overview

The main inspiration for the song came from the film Suburbia - Rebels der Vorstadt (1984) by Penelope Spheeris and its portrayal of violence and misery. The 1981 and 1985 Brixton Riots led Neil Tennant to reflect on boredom and the underlying tension in the suburbs .

In the different versions of the song you can hear violence , clinking glasses and growling dogs (intensified in the music video ).

Music video

The video, directed by Eric Watson , shows footage of the duo in suburban Los Angeles while they were in town for the then MTV Video Music Awards .
