Ittenhausen is a district of Ailingen , a district of Friedrichshafen on Lake Constance .

history

Ittenhausen was first mentioned in 1198. Due to Ittenhausen's favorable location with bog-free access to the Rotach on both sides , the site was used as a ford early on, long before a bridge was built. Since 1200, the ford has been part of the main route between the seat of Count Montfort in Tettnang and the bishopric in Markdorf . The route led via Kehlen , Hirschlatt Monastery , Ailingen, Berg and Raderach to Markdorf.

The year-round water flow of the Rotach ensured the operation of grain and wood mills, as well as various branches for centuries, although the chronicle 800 years Ittenhausen reports of frequent failure of the respective mill owner.

Ittenhausen Mill

Ittenhausen mill

The Ittenhausen mill is described as a central theme in the 800-year chronicle of the town of Ittenhausen. 800 years of mill operation are permanently documented, albeit with frequent changes of tenants and often moderate economic success.

  • 1198 The documentation of the donation of the mill to the Kreuzlingen monastery by the Habsburg ministers Wernher and Kuno is currently considered the first mention of the place and is therefore used as the date on which the place was founded.
  • 1514 The mill is pledged to the city of Buchhorn and could only be released from Kreuzlingen around 1610.
  • 1649 The mill, neglected in the Thirty Years' War, is restored at the instigation of the Abbot of Kreuzlingen.
  • 1735 A flood tears away the weir. A permanent solution was not found until 1860 by concreting.
  • 1831 privatization: the miller Franz Joseph Rauch completes the allodification and buys the mill. His son and successor is Johann Rauch.
  • 1847 The mill building is renovated and expanded.
  • 1905 Johann Rauch's sons Hermann and Wilhelm split the business. Grinding and sawmills are separated.
  • 1922 The two water wheels of the Mahl-Mühle are replaced by a Francis turbine. The mill provides electricity for lighting the municipality of Berg.
  • 1948 The war damage of the Second World War is repaired. The mill is leased to Robert Ringer.
  • 1984 After the death of Robert Ringer, the milling operations are stopped. The Mühlkanal has been swampy since then. Large parts of the machine house have also been dismantled.

Hammerstatt

The Hammerstatt is located north of the Mühlwehr on the side of the Rotach facing Ailingen. The name is probably derived from a medieval smelting of local iron ore deposits. The smelting of iron ore was declared discontinued from the 13th century. Foundations of old buildings are suspected but not proven.

Gehrenmännlesloch

According to the traditional legend, it is about a traumatized farmer from the foot of the Gehrenberg, who lost his farm and his family in an act of violence by the soldiers during the Thirty Years' War and hid in a hole in the ground near Ittenhausen for the rest of his life. The vernacular reported that the farmer, henceforth referred to as Gehrenmännle , hired himself out as a farmhand, cattle keeper and day laborer in the municipality of Ailingen. The Ailingen fools guild cherishes the saga with a mask group around the story.
