Itzhak Shoham

Itzhak Shoham (born November 14, 1947 Buenos Aires , Argentina ) is an Israeli diplomat .

Career

In 1970 Shoham emigrated from Argentina to Israel in the kibbutz Gazit. He studied Political Science , Latin American and Christian Studies at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem .

In 1973 he joined the Israeli diplomatic service. He initially served as an attaché at the embassy in Peru until 1977 . From 1977 to 1981 he was employed in the Israeli Foreign Ministry. From 1985 to 1986 Shoham was Second Secretary at the Embassy in Paraguay . From 1983 to 1985 he worked in the protocol department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1985 to 1986 he was director of the Latin America division of the Center for International Cooperation (MASHAV) at the Israeli Foreign Ministry. He served as First Secretary at the Embassy in Montevideo , Uruguay from 1986 to 1988 . From 1988 to 1991 he was a public relations advisor and liaison to the Holy See and the Italian embassy . From 1991 to 1993 he served in the Public Relations Department of the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1993 to 1994 he worked in the Europe 1 department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. From 1994 to 1997 Shoham was Israel’s Consul General in Istanbul . From 1997 to 1999 he served again at the embassy in Italy with the rank of minister. From 1999 to August 2001 he was director of the Europe 2 department in the Israeli Foreign Ministry. From 2001 to August 2005 he was Israel's ambassador to Singapore . On August 29, 2002, Shoham presented his accreditation as the first Israeli ambassador to East Timor to Xanana Gusmão .

From September 2005 to May 2007 Shoham temporarily headed various directorates in the State Department. From June 2007 to August 2009 he was Director of the Northeast Asia Office. In September 2009 he again took on an ambassadorial post, this time in Bangkok for Thailand and Cambodia . In September 2012, Shoham returned to the State Department as Deputy Director General and Head of Latin America and the Caribbean.

Shoham is married and has two sons.

In addition to Hebrew , he speaks Italian , English and Spanish .
