Ivans Klementjevs (born November 18, 1960 in Butniki , Krustpils District , Latvian SSR ) is a former Latvian canoeist who competed for the Soviet Union until 1991 . He won three medals in three Olympics.

Athletic career

Soviet Union

Klementjevs won his first international medal at the 1983 World Championships , when he and Sergej Ossadtschi won the silver medal in the two-man canoe over 500 meters behind the Yugoslavs Matija Ljubek and Mirko Nišović . At the 1985 World Championships , he won the single canoe over 1000 meters. The following year, Romanian Aurel Macarencu won ahead of Klementjevs on this route . 1987 in Duisburg won over 1000 meters Olaf Heukrodt from the GDR ahead of the Bulgarians Martin Marinow and Klementjevs.

At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , Klementjevs won his preliminary run ahead of the Canadian Larry Cain and the semifinals ahead of the Bulgarian Nikolai Buchalow . In the final, he crossed the finish line with a three second lead over Jörg Schmidt from the GDR, followed by Buchalow and Cain. At the 1989 World Championships , he won the 1000 meter final ahead of Larry Cain. Klementjevs won over 10,000 meters ahead of the Hungarian Zsolt Bohacs . The following year, Klementjevs won the world championships in Poznan over 1000 meters and took third place over 10,000 meters behind Bohacs and Jan Bartunek from Czechoslovakia. In 1991 the Soviet national team played for the last time at the World Championships in Paris . Klementjevs won his third title over 1000 meters in a row. Over 10,000 meters he won the silver medal behind Bohacs.

Latvia

From 1992 Klementjevs competed for Latvia. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , he finished third both in the preliminary stages and in the semi-finals. In the final the Bulgarian Nikolai Buchalow won with 0.68 seconds ahead of Klementjevs, 0.75 seconds behind the Hungarian György Zala crossed the finish line. The following year, Klementjevs won his first world title for Latvia at the 1993 World Championships in Copenhagen . Klementjevs won his fifth title over 1000 meters in a row at the 1994 World Championships in Mexico City . After a year 1995 without winning a medal, Klementjevs reached the Olympic final over 1000 meters for the third time at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta after a third place in the preliminary run and a victory in the semi-finals. Half a second behind the Czech Martin Doktor and one and a half seconds ahead of the Hungarian György Zala, the Latvian won the silver medal again in his last big race. After that, the sporting career of the teacher from Riga ended.

Political career

Klementjevs was a member of the Tautas Saskaņas partija party and is a member of the successor party Sociāldemokrātiskā partija "Saskaņa" . He was on the Riga City Council from 2001 to 2005 and was elected to the Latvian Parliament Saeima in 2006.
