The Magirus GmbH is a manufacturer of fire engines and equipment and part of CNH Industrial Group. It was created in 1996 under the name IVECO Magirus Brandschutztechnik through the spin-off of the fire protection division of Iveco Magirus , of which it is a 100 percent subsidiary . On September 26, 2013, the company was renamed Magirus.

history

Iveco Magirus Brandschutztechnik GmbH has its origins in the fire fighting technology manufacturer Magirus , which was founded in 1865 by Conrad Dietrich Magirus and taken over by Humboldt-Deutz (today: Deutz AG) in 1936 . Deutz continued the fire fighting vehicle production under the Magirus-Deutz brand . In 1974 Deutz founded the company Magirus-Deutz in order to outsource the business area at the turn of the next year and bring it into the new company Iveco . From January 1975 Magirus-Deutz belonged to 100 percent of Iveco, which in turn belonged to 80 percent to Fiat . The remaining 20 percent of Iveco was held by Deutz until 1980, after which Fiat was the sole owner of Iveco and thus also of Magirus-Deutz. In 1983 the Magirus-Deutz was renamed Iveco Magirus. The fire protection division was spun off into the subsidiary Iveco Magirus Brandschutztechnik in 1996. In 2012 it became known that the plants in Weisweil, Görlitz, Chambery and Graz will be closed and that a large fire protection center will be built in Ulm.

In 1997 Iveco Magirus Brandschutztechnik also took over the Austrian manufacturer Lohr in Kainbach near Graz . At the end of 2012 the plant with 130 employees, which achieved a turnover of 36 million euros in 2010, was to remain a service base due to restructuring and production was to be relocated to Ulm. However, the terminations were withdrawn at the end of the year. Contrary to the original plan, the vehicle assembly will increasingly take place in Kainbach. Since the beginning of March 2013 the company has been operating under the name Iveco Magirus Lohr . In the meantime the company name was shortened to Magirus Lohr .

In the third generation, Franz Lohr ran the Lohr family business, was then managing director for Lohr-Magirus and Iveco-Magirus, but left in 2012 and worked in 2013 for Gimaex , a French manufacturer of emergency vehicles, on setting up a production facility in the Graz area.

In December 2013 the company was renamed from Iveco Magirus Brandschutztechnik to Magirus . In the meantime it traded with Iveco-Lohr . The current company name (2019) is Magirus-Lohr . At the end of 2020, Magirus Lohr , which was authorized to use the Styrian coat of arms, will move from the Kainbach location, where Lohr began but has no expansion options, to Premstätten under building a new company there.

In addition, the Multistar 2 was developed in a joint project with Klaas Alu-Kranbau from Ascheberg (Westphalia) . Part of the production takes place in Ascheberg (Westphalia) at the Klaas company . Here the telescopic working mast, the support and the necessary attachments are attached to the chassis . The completion takes place in Ulm at Iveco Magirus itself. B. the equipment room with the equipment and the pump unit and the water tank installed.

Until 2005, the brand names Iveco Mezzi Speciali and Eurofire were also part of the fire protection activities of Iveco; however, both names were abandoned and replaced by Magirus in the case of Iveco Mezzi Speciali and Iveco Magirus in the case of Eurofire.

Magirus offers the full range of fire fighting vehicles and pumps. According to their own statements, they are the market leader in the turntable ladder sector and in 2010 they brought the world's highest turntable ladder with fully hydraulic control onto the market.
