Ivo Michiels , actually Henri Ceuppens (born January 8, 1923 in Mortsel , Belgium , † October 7, 2012 in Le Barroux , France ), was a Flemish writer , screenwriter and film director .

Life

Michiels worked as a nurse in a hospital in Lübeck during the Second World War . He later worked as a laboratory assistant and from 1948 to 1957 he was a journalist for Het Handelsblad . From 1957 to 1978 he was a publisher at Ontwikkeling . At the same time he worked from 1959 to 1983 as an editor at Nieuw Vlaams Tijdschrift and from 1966 to 1978 taught at the Hoger Rijksinstituut voor Toneel- en Cultuurspreiding in Brussels . He was an honorary member of the Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal- en Letterkunde and in 1993 he received an honorary doctorate from the Catholic University of Brussels . He also received an honorary doctorate from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven .

In 1946 he published his first volume of poetry under the pseudonym Ivo Michiels and with the name of the verdict . His first novel Het vonnis appeared three years later. He wrote his books in Dutch . He had his first great success with his symbolic-existentialist novel Het afscheid , which appeared in 1957 and was published in Germany under the title Der Abschied in 1960. The story, which is about a sailor who has to separate from his wife again and again, shows his first step towards experimental prose. For this book he was awarded the Arkprijs van het Vrije Woord in 1958 . Another big hit was his Alpha cycle, which includes his novels Het boek alfa (1963), Orchis militaris (1968), Exit (1971), Samuel, o Samuel (1973) and Dixi (t) (1979). In Germany, the first two novels under the titles Das Buch Alpha (1965, translated by Georg Hermanowski ) and Orchis militaris: A report (1969) were published by Suhrkamp Verlag ; for Orchis militaris he received the Vijverbergprijs in 1969 .

In parallel to his writing, Michiels also occasionally worked on film. He wrote several scripts and directed two films in 1955. His directorial debut Meeuwen sterven in de haven was shown at the 1956 Cannes International Film Festival .

Michiels died on October 7, 2012 in his home in Le Barroux. He had been living in the Vaucluse department since 1979 . His last novel Maya Maya should appear in January 2013.
