Iwajlo Georgiev Kalfin ( Bulgarian Ивайло Георгиев Калфин , scientific transcription Ivajlo Georgiev Kalfin ; born May 30, 1964 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian politician of the Alternative for the Bulgarian Rebirth (ABW). He has been Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Affairs since 2014. Before that, he was a member of the European Parliament for the Bulgarian Socialist Party (BSP) from 2009 to 2014 .

Iwajlo Kalfin studied from 1983 to 1988 at the Sofia University of National and World Economy and from 1998 to 1999 at Loughborough University in England . He founded the National Movement of Social Democrats and was Deputy Chairman of the Joint Parliamentary Commission of Bulgaria and the European Union. 1994 to 1997, 2000 to 2001 and since 2005 he was a member of the Bulgarian National Assembly . Since 2004 he has been a member of the Advisory Committee of the Bulgarian National Bank. In 2001 and 2004 he was an OSCE election observer in Kosovo . From 2002 to 2005 he worked as economic advisor to the Bulgarian President Georgi Parvanov , from 2005 to 2009 he was Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of Bulgaria.

In the 2009 European elections , Kalfin was the coalition's lead candidate for Bulgaria and was elected as a member of the European Parliament . On July 27, he was replaced as Foreign Minister by Rumjana Schelewa . In the European Parliament, he was a member of the S&D group and deputy chairman of the budget committee .

In January 2014 Kalfin resigned from the BSP and joined the newly founded Alternative for the Bulgarian Rebirth , as its top candidate he ran for the 2014 European elections. However, the ABW failed because of the national threshold. In the national parliamentary elections a few months later , the ABW managed to move into the Narodno Sabranie , where it became a coalition partner in the Borisov II government . Kalfin was appointed Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Labor and Social Policy.
