Nikolai Eftimow Mladenov (in English transcription Nikolay Eftimov Mladenov , Bulgarian Николай Евтимов Младенов ; born  May 5, 1972 in Sofia ) is a Bulgarian politician of the GERB party , former member of the European Parliament and Bulgarian Foreign Minister . Since August 2013 he has been the UN special envoy for Iraq and head of the UN on site.

In 1995 he finished his studies with a major in "International Relations" at the Sofia University for National and World Economics with a bachelor's degree. A year later, he completed a master's degree program at London's King's College of London University .

Between 1996 and 1998 Nikolai Mladenow was project manager at the Open Society Institute in Sofia. Afterwards he worked for a short time as coordinator in the social department of the World Bank in Bulgaria. In 1999 he founded the European Institute in Sofia, of which he remained chairman until 2001.

In the 2001 parliamentary elections, he was elected from the list of the conservative coalition United Democratic Forces (ODS) as a member of the 39th Bulgarian parliament . In Parliament he became Deputy Chairman of the Commission for European Integration and a member of the Commission for Foreign Policy, Defense and Security. On March 12, 2002 he was elected to the executive committee of the party Union of Democratic Forces (SDS for short, which was part of the ODS). In the following time Mladenow was party spokesman. On February 22nd he was elected deputy chairman of the SDS party. He held this post until August 16, 2005, when he submitted his resignation after the parliamentary elections that were lost .

Between 2005 and 2007 Mladenow worked as a consultant for the World Bank, for the American International Republican Institute in Bulgaria, Afghanistan , Yemen and other countries in the Middle East. In 2006 he became advisor to the Defense Commission and the Foreign Policy Commission at the Iraqi Parliament.

In 2007 he was elected from the list of the Bulgarian party GERB as a Member of the European Parliament for the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) and European Democrats . In the European Parliament he was a member of the Committee on Internal Market and Consumer Protection and the Delegation for Relations with Israel, as well as Deputy in the Committee on Foreign Affairs, Subcommittee on Security and Defense and Delegation for Relations with Afghanistan.

After the Bulgarian parliamentary election in 2009, which was won by the GERB party, Nikolai Mladenov was sworn in as Minister of Defense in the government of Boyko Borisov on July 27, succeeding Nikolai Zonew in this post . After Rumjana Schelewa resigned , Mladenov was elected Bulgaria's new foreign minister on January 27, 2010. Successor as Defense Minister was Anju Angelow . In February 2013 the entire cabinet resigned; the new head of government Marin Rajkow also succeeded Mladenov as foreign minister.
