Iwan (Ioan) Iwanowytsch Osarkewytsch ( Ukrainian Іван (Іоан) Іванович Озаркевич , Jan Ozarkiewicz ; born December 5, 1826 in Hlyboke , Galicia , Austrian Empire ; † February 9, 1903 in Bolechiv , Galicia ) was a Ukrainian priest , Austria-Hungary Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church and Galician Member of the Austrian Chamber of Deputies .

Life

Ivan Osarkevich was born in the Austrian crown land Kingdom of Galicia and Lodomeria in the village of Hlyboke ( Глибоке ) in what is now Bohorodchany Rajon of the Ukrainian Oblast Ivano-Frankivsk as the son of the Ukrainian cultural and educational activist Ivan Osarkevytsch ( Ікан Григорозавич95 .

He studied Greek Catholic theology in Lemberg and was ordained a priest in 1848 . He then became an administrator and from 1854 he worked as a pastor in Beleluja . In 1860 he became dean in Snjatyn and in 1882 he became canon and councilor of the metropolitan consistory in Lemberg. From 1884 he was pastor in Bolechiv

As a moderate populist he was a member of the Galician state parliament between 1867 and 1876 and from the 5th to the 7th legislative period (1873 to 1891) member of the Austrian House of Representatives for the Kolomea - Śniatyn - Kosów district . Osarkewytsch campaigned for the national rights of Ukrainians and criticized the abuses of the national authorities. He was in opposition to the politics of the New Era and in 1895 led a large Ukrainian delegation to Vienna to protest in front of the Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I against the widespread abuse of power in the last election in Galicia. He also called for a fair tax system, tax exemption for loan funds and the introduction of a land registry. He also campaigned for the establishment of a university in Chernivtsi and Ukrainian grammar schools in Chortkiv and Przemyśl . In addition, he occasionally wrote sermons and poetry.

He was married to Teofila Okunewska and father of three sons and two daughters, including the priests and cultural activist Volodymyr Osarkewytsch ( Володимир Іванович Озаркевич ; 1853-1912), the writer and organizer of the Ukrainian women's movement Natalija Kobrynska and the doctor Yevhen Osarkewytsch ( Євген Іванович Озаркевич ; 1861-1916).
