The Kosów district was a political district in the crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria . Its territory covered parts of eastern Galicia in what is now western Ukraine ( Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast , Kosiv district and parts of Verkhovyna district ), the seat of the district administration was the place Kosów . After the First World War , Austria had to cede the entire district to Poland .

It bordered in the north and on the district of Peczeniżyn and the district of Kolomea , in the northeast on the district Śniatyn , in the southeast on the Austrian crown land Bukowina , in the southwest on the Kingdom of Hungary and in the northwest on the district Nadwórna .

After the district offices were abolished at the end of October 1865 and their competencies were transferred to the district offices , the division of the country into two administrative areas was also abolished after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867. In addition, in the course of the separation of the political from the judicial administration, separate administrative and judicial authorities were created. While the judicial division remained largely unaffected, municipalities of several judicial districts were combined into administrative districts.

The Kosów district consisted of 44 municipalities and 36 manor areas in the 1910 census and covered an area of ​​1801 km². In 1900 the population had still comprised 77,923 people, in 1910 85,805 people lived here. The majority of the population lived in the area with Ruthenian colloquial language (86%) and the Greek Catholic faith, Jews made up around 11% of the population.
