The district of Brzeżany (until the 1880s also with the German name of the district of Brzeżan ) was a political district in the crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria . Its territory included parts of eastern Galicia in today's Western Ukraine ( Oblast Ternopil , Raion Berezhany and Rajon Kosowa ), seat of the district administration was the city Brzezany . In November 1918, after the collapse of the Danube Monarchy at the end of World War I, the district was briefly part of the West Ukrainian People's Republic .

It bordered on the north by the district Zborów , in the northeast and east by the district Tarnopol , on the south by the district Podhajce , in the southwest of the district Rohatyn and in the northwest on the district Przemyślany .

A forerunner of the later district (administrative and judicial authority at the same time) was created at the end of 1850, the district administration Brzeżan was subordinate to the government area of ​​Stanislau and included the following judicial districts:

After the announcement in 1854, the Brzeżan District Office was established on September 29, 1855 (still responsible for administration and jurisdiction) within the Brzeżan District.

After the district offices were abolished at the end of October 1865 and their competencies were transferred to the district offices , the division of the country into two administrative areas was also abolished after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867. In addition, in the course of the separation of the political from the judicial administration, separate administrative and judicial authorities were created. While the judicial division remained largely unaffected, municipalities of several judicial districts were combined into administrative districts.

The Brzeżany district consisted of 78 parishes and 66 manor areas at the 1910 census and covered an area of ​​1155 km². In 1900 the population was 94,589, in 1910 104,810 people lived here. The majority of the population lived in the area with Ruthenian colloquial language (59%) and the Greek Catholic faith, with Jews making up around 10% of the population.
