The Tarnopol district was a political district in the crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria . Its territory included parts of eastern Galicia in today's Western Ukraine ( Oblast Ternopil , Ternopil Raion as well as parts of the Rajons Terebovlia , the Rajons Zboriv and the Rajons Kosowa ), seat of the district administration was the place Tarnopol . After the First World War , Austria had to cede the entire district to Poland .

It bordered on the north by the district Brody , in the northeast on the district Zbaraż , on the east by the district Skalat , the south by the district Trembowla , in the southwest of the district Podhajce , the west by the district Brzezany and in the northwest on the district Zborów .

A forerunner of the later district (administrative and judicial authority at the same time) was created at the end of 1850, the Tarnopol District Commission was subordinate to the Stanislau government area and included the following judicial districts:

  • Tarnopol Judicial District, Section I.
  • Tarnopol Judicial District, Section II.
  • Zbaraż judicial district

After the announcement in 1854, on September 29, 1855, the Tarnopol District Office (still responsible for administration and jurisdiction) was established within the Tarnopol District.

After the district offices were abolished at the end of October 1865 and their competencies were transferred to the district offices , the division of the country into two administrative areas was also abolished after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867. In addition, in the course of the separation of the political from the judicial administration, separate administrative and judicial authorities were created. While the judicial division remained largely unaffected, municipalities of several judicial districts were combined into administrative districts.

In the 1910 census, the Tarnopol district consisted of 86 municipalities and 78 manor areas and covered an area of ​​1164 km². In 1900 the population had still included 131,632 people, in 1910 142,138 people lived here. The majority of the population lived in the area with Polish colloquial language (51%) and the Greek Catholic faith, Jews made up around 14% of the population.
