The district Żółkiew was a political district in the crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria of Austria-Hungary . Its territory included parts of eastern Galicia in what is now western Ukraine ( Lviv Oblast , Shovkwa Raion and parts of Kamjanka-Buska Raion and Sokal Raion ). The seat of the district administration was the city of Żółkiew . After the First World War , Austria had to cede the entire district to Poland .

It bordered the Sokal District in the north, the Kamionka Strumiłowa District in the east, the Lviv District in the south, the Gródek Jagielloński District in the southwest, and the Rawa Ruska District in the northwest .

history

A forerunner of the later district (administrative and judicial authority at the same time) was created at the end of 1850, the district administration Żółkiew was subordinate to the government area of Lemberg and included the following judicial districts:

  • Żółkiew judicial district
  • Mosty-Wielkie judicial district
  • Kamionka Strumiłowa Judicial District

After the announcement in 1854, on September 29, 1855, the District Office Żółkiew (still responsible for administration and jurisdiction) was established within the Żółkiew District.

After the district offices were abolished at the end of October 1865 and their competencies were transferred to the district offices , the division of the country into two administrative areas was also abolished after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867. In addition, in the course of the separation of the political from the judicial administration, separate administrative and judicial authorities were created. While the judicial division remained largely unaffected, municipalities of several judicial districts were combined into administrative districts.

The new political district Żółkiew was formed from the following districts:

The district Żółkiew consisted in the 1910 census of 83 communities and 47 manor areas and covered an area of 1203 km². In 1900 the population had still comprised 90,227 people, in 1910 99,654 people lived here. A majority of Ruthenians (72%) of the Greek Catholic faith lived in the area, while Jews made up around 10% of the population.
