The Borszczów district was a political district in the crown land of Galicia and Lodomeria . Its territory included parts of eastern Galicia in today's Western Ukraine ( Oblast Ternopil , Borshchiv Raion and Rajon Chortkiv ), seat of the district administration was the market Borszczow . In November 1918, after the collapse of the Danube Monarchy at the end of World War I, the district was briefly part of the West Ukrainian People's Republic .

It bordered the Husiatyn district to the north, the Russian Empire to the east and south , the Austrian crown land Bukowina to the southwest, the Zaleszczyki district to the west and the Czortków district to the northwest .

A forerunner of the later district (administrative and judicial authority at the same time) was created at the end of 1850, the district administration Borszczow was subordinate to the government area Stanislau and comprised the following judicial districts:

  • Zalesczyki judicial district

After the announcement in 1854, the Borszczów District Office (still responsible for administration and jurisdiction) within the Czortków District was established on September 29, 1855 .

After the district offices were abolished at the end of October 1865 and their competencies were transferred to the district offices , the division of the country into two administrative areas was also abolished after the Austro-Hungarian Compromise in 1867. In addition, in the course of the separation of the political from the judicial administration, separate administrative and judicial authorities were created. While the judicial division remained largely unaffected, municipalities of several judicial districts were combined into administrative districts.

The Borszczów district consisted of 80 municipalities and 63 manor areas in the 1910 census and covered an area of ​​1025 km². In 1900 the population was 109,220, in 1910 109,320 people lived here. The majority of the population lived in the area with Ruthenian colloquial language (68%) and Greek-Catholic faith, Jews made up around 12% of the population.
