Ivan Osarkevych

Iwan Hryhorowytsch Osarkewytsch ( Ukrainian Іван Григорович Озаркевич ; * 1795 in Beleluja , Galicia , Austrian Empire ; † August 20, 1854 in Kolomyja , Austrian Empire) was a Ukrainian priest of the Ukrainian activist , co-founder of the Catholic and educational Church , author of the Amateur theater in Kolomyia, the first public Ukrainian-speaking theater in Galicia.

Life

Ivan Osarkewytsch graduated from the Theological Faculty of Lviv University in 1824 and then took up the position of pastor in Hlyboka ( Глибока ) and Kolomyia. During the revolution of 1848/49 in Austria was active as an active member of the Ruska Rada in Kolomyia (Ukrainian Руська Рада ). Osarkevych led from May 27th July. / June 8,  1848 greg. Ukrainian plays in Kolomyia and, from October 19, 1848, in Lemberg and staged other plays in the following years. In total, the theater presented 9 productions for three years, 7 of which were by Osarkevich. He also revised pieces by Ivan Kotlyarevsky and Hryhorij Kwitka-Osnovyanenko . In 1852 he also translated a book of Aesop's fables into the Ukrainian language and wrote historical novels and a collection of poems. Ivan Franko valued Osarkevych and recognized the importance of the development of Ukrainian culture, especially the theater, that he initiated.

Ivan Osarkevych was the father of the priest and Galician MP Ivan Osarkevych and the grandfather of the writer and organizer of the Ukrainian women's movement Natalija Kobrynska .

At the Academic Regional Ukrainian Drama Theater in Kolomyja named after Ivan Osarkevich there is a plaque in his memory
