Józef Grzegorz Wojtarowicz (born March 10, 1791 in Szynwałd , Lesser Poland ; † May 31, 1875 in Kraków ) was Bishop of Tarnów .

Life

He came from a rural property near Tarnów . After graduating from high school in Tarnów, he studied theology in Lemberg and Vienna . On 27 August 1817 he was in Vienna by Auxiliary Bishop Matthias Paul Steindl for priests ordained. In 1819 he became a professor of moral theology at the seminary in Przemyśl . In 1830 he was a member of the cathedral chapter , from 1836 to 1839 Vicar General of the Bishop of Przemyśl Michał Korczyński .

On July 13, 1840 he was appointed Bishop of Tarnów. He received the episcopal ordination on November 22nd, 1840 in the cathedral church of Przemyśl by Bishop Franciszek Ksawery Zachariasiewicz . In the diocese of Tarnów, in the cathedral , it was installed on November 29, 1840. His opposition to the authorities in Vienna forced him to resign on July 15, 1850. He had to leave the Tarnów diocese and lived in Kraków until his death.

The retired Bishop Józef Grzegorz Wojtarowicz was buried in the Rakowicki Cemetery in Krakow. On the centenary of his death on December 12, 1975 , Bishop Jerzy Karol Ablewicz had the remains transferred to Tarnów and buried in the cathedral's crypt.
