Józef Alojzy Pukalski (German Josef Alois Pukalski ; Czech Josef Alois Pukalsky ; born March 15, 1798 in Teschen in Austrian Silesia ; † January 6, 1885 in Tarnów ) was Bishop of Tarnów .

Life

Josef Alois Pukalski was born in Teschen as the son of a father of German descent and an Italian woman. He studied theology in Olomouc , where he was ordained a priest on September 22, 1821 . In 1830 he was incardinated in the Diocese of Tarnów , whose area had belonged to Austria since the First Partition of Poland . As a pastor in Wilamowice ( Wilmesau ), he was mainly given pastoral care for the German population.

In 1851 he was accepted into the cathedral chapter of Tarnów and on July 31, 1851 by Emperor Franz Joseph I , who had the right of appointment, appointed bishop of Tarnów. The papal confirmation by Pius IX. did not take place until March 15, 1852. He received his episcopal ordination on May 23, 1852 from Michele Viale-Prelà, the apostolic nuncio in Austria ; Co-consecrators were the military bishop of Austria , Johann Michael Leonhard and Franz Xaver Zenner , auxiliary bishop in Vienna . In the diocese of Tarnów, in the cathedral , it was installed on June 29, 1852. As a bishop, his special concern was the formation of priests, he established new deaneries and parishes . He was also a promoter of the school system . A scholarship for poor students arose from his private fortune ; he also took on I. Vatican part. For his services he was awarded the Austrian Imperial Order of the Iron Crown .

He found his final resting place in the St. Joseph's Chapel in the old cemetery in Tarnów.
