József Réti

József Réti , also József Réty , born József Redl (born July 8, 1925 in Ploieşti ; † November 5, 1973 in Budapest ) was a Hungarian opera singer ( tenor ).

Life

He was born as József Redl on July 8, 1925 in Ploieşti, Romania . He grew up in Hungary in a small town near Budapest.

He first studied piano and composition, but began his vocal studies in 1948. He began his singing career as a choir singer in the Franz Liszt Choir. He then completed his training at the Franz Liszt Music Academy in Budapest and was immediately engaged at the National Opera in Budapest. There he made his debut in the supporting role of Parpignol in La Bohème . In the following four years his repertoire grew slowly at first. In 1956 he won the Schumann Prize in Berlin .

His breakthrough came in 1957 - Réti won a singing competition in Moscow , in which none other than Tito Schipa was on the jury . And in Hungary he finally got his first big role as Almaviva in the Barber of Seville .

The year 1957 was also the beginning of his career as an oratorio singer , which was ultimately the more successful compared to the operatic career. He also gave many concerts as a song interpreter .

From 1964 he was appointed professor at the Franz Liszt Music Academy .

Outside of Hungary he also performed in Vienna , Paris , Nice , Rome , Bologna , Prague , Düsseldorf , Helsinki , Rotterdam , Basel and Geneva .

After a long illness, Réti died on November 7, 1973 in Budapest.
