Jörn Mothes

Jörn Mothes (* 1962 in Stralsund ) is a German theologian , former GDR civil rights activist and environmentalist . Between 1998 and 2008 he was Mecklenburg-West Pomerania State Commissioner for the records of the State Security Service of the former GDR .

Life

Born in Stralsund in 1962 as the son of the doctor Winrich Mothes , Jörn Mothes passed his Abitur in Schwerin . Since 1978 he worked in the Protestant youth work in Schwerin and participated in several peace and ecology groups in Mecklenburg and Thuringia . Since he was denied biology studies, he first completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter . Between 1983 and 1986 he studied in Rostock from 1986 to 1989 Jena theology . There he worked in working groups on ecological and development issues. In 1989 he was appointed vicar of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Mecklenburg . Shortly before the fall of the Wall , he went to Nicaragua as a development worker . In view of the political developments, however, he returned to the GDR and in 1989 joined the New Forum and the Citizens Committee for the dissolution of the State Security in Gera and Jena . For the opposition he sat at the round table of the People's Chamber . In 1990 he was appointed the first director of the Müritz National Park due to his participation in the GDR national park program . In 1993 he switched to the state commissioner for the Stasi records in Schwerin and became his deputy. In 1998 he took over his post and worked as a Stasi records officer in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania until 2008. Re-election was not possible after two terms of office. Since September 2008 he has been head of department in the Ministry for Education, Science and Culture Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. In 2009, the parliamentary groups of the SPD and CDU in the Brandenburg state parliament considered electing Mothes as the first Brandenburg state commissioner for the Stasi files. However, this then became Ulrike Poppe .

Since November 2017, he has been the successor to Richard Schröder as Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Federal Commissioner for Stasi Records.

Jörn Mothes is married and has four children.
