Live back and forth is a satirical film by Douglas Wolfsperger from 1985.

action

Master baker Frieder Witz runs a small bakery . He was once a passionate baker, but he lost that joy in everyday work and family life. Instead, he is plagued by the usual hardships of small craft businesses : the installments for the kneading machine are low , there is no money for further necessary investments or a vacation trip again. Instead, he experiences the usual rut of waking up early and the usual arguments with suppliers, employees and family members. When a new, tough competition arises with a new supermarket with a baked goods department, an unusual plan matures in which his doctor plays along. He fakes a fatal accident with a staged fall and goes into hiding. In this way, he wants to escape the unsatisfactory professional and family situation, really enjoy underground life and, in addition, learn what his dear relatives and friends actually think of him.

With them, the mourning for the deceased is very limited, instead the desires for the inheritance come to light before the funeral itself. Frieder Witz wants to show his friends and relatives their falsehood and give them a real shock, which is why he secretly cheats himself as a guest in his own funeral service. The shock actually works, even a lame person can walk again. But instead of the mourning society being happy that the one who has just been honored in the highest tones is alive again among them, they want to throw themselves angrily at Frieder Witz. On the run from his mourning party, Witz is run over by a young car thief, who then drives away. The mourning society makes no move to prevent the person who caused the accident, but gathers in a circle around the now really dead master baker with liberated laughter.

background

Live criss-cross was the first feature film by Douglas Wolfsperger. To emphasize the satire genre , Wolfsperger used the stylistic device of black and white film . He shot the film with a high proportion of amateur actors in his hometown of Konstanz . Richard Gandor was actually a master baker with his own craft business in the Constance Niederburg, his house and business served as a film location. Wolfsperger and Gandor worked together in two other films ( Kies and Test Drive to Paradise ).

The film was presented at the 1985 Biberach Film Festival and the 1986 Max Ophüls Prize Film Festival and was released in German cinemas on May 29, 1986 at Kinowelt .

Reviews

"Wolfsperger had a leading actor whom Fassbinder would have envied: 'With wide-eyed, speaking face, equally convincing in the front of the bakery as in the listless evening marriage bed.'"

"'A German film full of malice!'"

“'Instead of a picturesque idyll and indulgent Lake Constance romance, Wolfsperger paints the musty atmosphere of a petty bourgeoisie that hides low instincts behind superficial decency.'"
