There are documented four Jewish cemeteries in the Bavarian city of Augsburg .

Medieval cemetery

The medieval cemetery, which was near the apex of today's street "An der Blauenkap", no longer exists. It had its catchment area as far as Aichach , Lauingen and Donauwörth . In 1438/39 it was confiscated and cleared away. The tombstones were used to build the town hall. Two undated tombstones are still in the courtyard of a house at Peutingerstraße 11, as are two fragments of another tombstone in the Jewish Culture Museum Augsburg-Swabia . A park has been located on the area of the former Jewish cemetery since 1897.

Jewish cemetery in Augsburg-Kriegshaber

The cemetery is located in today's Augsburg district of Kriegshaber in Madison- / Hooverstr. 15. Burials took place in this cemetery from 1623 to 1951. It was also used by the Jews from Steppach , Munich (until 1868), Pfersee , Schlipsheim , Fischach and Augsburg. The cemetery was expanded in 1695 and 1722.

In 1942 the cemetery was desecrated. After 1945, a stele was erected from the rubble of the tombstone in the cemetery in memory of the victims of the Nazi era .

There are still around 400 tombstones, the oldest dating from 1662.
