The Jewish cemetery in Wallerstein , a community in the Swabian district of Donau-Ries , is located about one kilometer east of the village in the middle of fields.

history

The Jewish cemetery in Wallerstein was established around 1510. After the Thirty Years' War at the latest , the cemetery was the central Jewish burial place in the county of Oettingen , d. H. the burial place for the Jews from Ederheim , Hainsfarth , Kleinerdlingen and Oettingen.

The cemetery was badly desecrated in 1926. In the 122.20 ares large cemetery, only about 300 of the original 900 gravestones ( Mazewot ) are left. The last burial in the cemetery took place in 1941.

The cemetery was desecrated several times during the Nazi era , and towards the end of the war a large part of the gravestones was cleared and smashed.

Current condition

After the Second World War , the still findable and preserved tombstones were brought back.

The Tahara House , which was to the left of the entrance gate, was demolished in the fall of 1974 after the roof collapsed due to the neglect of the building.
